Mist wafted through the still night air. Barely able to see a rabbit hope in front of his face, a silver and black tabby tom trekked on, letting his paws carry him. He did not know why he was padded nor where he was going, but he went nonetheless. Stopping only once to try and get his barrings, the tom slowly let some nervousness seep from behind his mask, to be worn on his face. Rainstripe finally was able to admit it to himself.
He was scared.
And deathly scared at that. With no knowledge on his location, RainStripe finally stopped in front of a rose bush, with a single bud. He sat and shook his mind in agitation. Why couldn't he remember anything?
"Because your dreaming." a voice said from behind him. RainStripe spun around, hissing, but stopped short. A frosty colored tom sat before him, his tail hooked neatly around a paw. Then it all came back to him. his deputy ceremony, cats dieing all around, IceStars death, his journey to Star Pine, touching his nose to the bark and then....this.
"IceStar?" the StreamClan deputy asked, coming out of his memory trance.
The frosted looking tom nodded. He trained his rigid blue eyes on RainStripe.
"Are you ready to receive your nine lives and name, warrior?"
RainStripe took a deep breath, before looking at his former leader and nodding. Icestar nodded back.
"Very well then." IceStar seemed to blend in with the mist, but as it receded, he could pick out his leaders features more clearly. A long tail, disheveled jaw, and a few darker hairs on his chest all signified the leader.
More StarClan cats stepped out- or more appropriately, appeared- from the fog. A tawny colored she-cat was the first to step forward. RainStripe looked at his niece, Icestar stepped from her path, with pride and sorrow. She shouldn't have died. she was so young.
"Frozenpaw-" FrozenPaw shook her head before he could continue.
"RainStripe, with this life, I give you courage. Use it well to to keep heart, when others fade."
FrozenPaw touched her nose to RainStripes, and immediately, he felt a chaotic him bolt fly through him, leaving him bewildered and gasping for breath as the apprentice drew away. Next, a black and white tom stepped- or more likely limped- to the warrior. TellerHeart. the old elders name flashed through his mind quickly.
"With this life, I give you justice. Use it well to judge truth from lie." Again, bolts seemed to be invisibly shot at him, burning his pelt and trying to retch his very innards from his body. The next lives passed from his mother, father, his brothers mate, an apprentice hood friend of his, his brother, and a small kit that was lost to greencough. Giving him loyalty, energy, protection, mentoring, compassion and love.
at last, feeling incredibly drained, Icestar turned in front of RainStripe.
"With this life, I give you certainty, nobility, and faith. Use it to lead you Clan through troubles and glories, darkness and light." IceStars touch felt as agonizing as if the weight of his responsibility of his Clan was actually bearing down on him, crushing him into the ground. As the leader drew away, the silver and black toms legs nearly buckled beneath him.
"RainStripe, you have the lives of a leader, so you name shall match it. RainStripe is gone, and will never return. RainStar has come in his turn."
The StarClan cats chanted his name, reminding him of his apprentice ceremony, when most of these cats had been living. but suddenly, in the glory of his moment, the starClan cats vanished.
"Wait!" he called out.
"Come back! IceStar, help me! I can't run a Clan alone!"
Silence respond to his plea. Moments passed. Finally, a voice echoed through out the vast open plain, or maybe, it was just in his head.
"You shall never be alone. I shall be with you, for as long as you walk the Earth and longer." but the voice was didn't hold the sharpness of Icestar, nor the tone of any cat that had given him a life. Puzzled, the tom looked around. The mist had returned and he had turbed back towards the rose bush. The single bud had bloomed.
"RosePelt.." the silver and black warrior whispered, his first loves face reflecting in his mind.
"But beware, tom.
'The water is calm
Like a dream in the day
No ripples disturb the peace
But when shadows fall
The liquid is broken
The water is all
But ceased'."
The tom awoke, gasping and panting, soaked his sweat, with some strange words echoing through his head. RainStripe- no RainStar- raised his head and looked at the star shape in the sacred tree.
"I wont fail you, Rosepelt. Not again.." and with nine lives, a leaders name, and a forsaken prophecy, the leader turned, and began his way home as a new cat.
